Little Cafe bears Fruit

While on a little trip back home to the Sunshine Coast I decided to check out a little cafe called Wheatberries Bakery. This cafe started as a bakery and is home to the best cookies in the entire world, it’s coffee doesn’t take a back seat either.
The Sechelt location has an open wood feel with sunflowers through out the cafe. There is large bay windows through out the cafe seating area and both indoor and outdoor area’s are bathed in natural light for most of the day.
The company started in the garage of the Mark & Jane Yellowley Robert’s Creek home in 1997 as just a bakery and had quite the following from the early beginnings. They opened their first location in Gibsons (circa 2002) to foster more growth beyond what their garage could handle. At this time they started the cafe portion.
The little bakery that could
The Sechelt Location has been operating for about three years and is centrally located right behind the cenotaph at the end of Cowrie Street.
The little family run company now has two locations in Gibsons, a year round small kiosk at the Langdale Ferry Terminal and the Sechelt Location. I don’t think their after world domination (aka like the big green machine) but it is so nice to get a good cup of coffee before catching the ferry.
The Coffee is supplied by Straight Coffee Traders of Wilson Creek another family run coastal enterprise and is organic fair trade and offers a wide variety of roasts to chose from. I had dry cappuccino which had beautiful velvet foam and was perfectly made. I couldn’t of ask for a better cup anywhere on the Lower Mainland.
The Sechelt location has wireless and was working the last time I was in town. ( March, 09 )
Langdale where the hell is Langdale?
Langdale’s claim to fame is the BC Ferries terminal to Vancouver and for the longest time if you ever missed a boat all you had to look forward to was three sparsely filled vending machines and a dullsville of waiting room for two hours.
Well more then a year ago now Wheatberries took over a former hot dog stand and turned it into a coffee Kiosk which they decided to keep open all year long.
Anything, ANYTHING is better then BC ferries coffee and when I missed the boat a couple of times last winter it was the saving grace of a long two hour wait.

Much as I have appreciated the rise of Wheatberries and their past ethical business sense, my recent experiences at the Langdale ferry terminal have exploded everything.
Firstly, after, initial enthusiasm that Wheatberries had realized a real need for the travelling public, I found the Langdale terminal place continually inadequately staffed to meet the needs of the ferry travelling public. Added to this it was staffed by inefficient, inexperienced, body-pierced young people, who left me less than enthused about returning.
Secondly, on a recent trip, I produced my own travel mug for filling with a basic coffee and was charged $2.35! When I asked about a discount for bringing my own mug, I was told there wasn’t any! This same mug at Starbucks in Gibsons is refilled by much more pleasant and professional “barristas” for less than $2.00. There, I leave whatever is the difference in the jar. (You can bet I left nothing at Wheatberries!)
Hi Dave thanks for your comments. I haven’t been to the Langdale Wheatberries in quite some time, I was at the Sechelt Location last week and received the same great coffee but the service was a bit slow I must admit.
But the no discount for the cup that doesn’t sound right, nor does the 2.35 for a cup of regular roast, I would have challenged the barista on that.
And you might be right about Starbucks, but their profits are not local nor are the roasts and they aren’t even remotely fair trade, so only one seeing your green is Howard Shultz. (Except for that change left in the jar)
But again that is just my complete and basis opinion.
Does anyone know if Wheatberries is sold in Vancouver?
Hi Jaime, Wheatberries uses Strait Coffee Roasters and I believe you can find them in Vancouver. If not then check out their website for contact information. http://www.straitcoffee.ca
I admit that I don’t usually go to Wheatberries for coffee, but their FOOD is far and above Starbucks. We get a chocolate ganache cake at least a few times a year for special occasions, the raspberry oatmeal muffins, or sandwiches every now and then.
The chocolate ganache cake is expensive but worth EVERY penny.
The food is amazing. I like the drip coffee better than Starbucks (and I’m a former SB’s employee!) but SB’s still wins for the espresso drinks.
The only thing I wish is that their non coffee drinks (juices, etc) were a bit cheaper. They are quite expensive.
I completely agree with Scattered Mom. We forgo pastries in Vancouver and wait till we reach the Gibsons Wheatberries before we eat. We can’t stand the inferior quality of Starbucks and since the deterioration of Capers in the hands of “Whole Foods”, we’d rather make it ourselves or get it from Wheatberries.
