Geoff Howe arrived from the Island primed and ready to go for our little tour of Vancouver cafes, but with him having to be back in Saskatoon on Monday we had a lot to sample and not much time. What to do ? Well instead of making each cafe its own post I decided to make a table. A coffee table (sorry I have a horrible sense of humour).

But kids, don’t try this at home. After four hours, five cafes, six drinks and 12 shots of espresso, both Geoff and I were more than done. This isn’t something I would suggest or even do again, but as photographers who love coffee it was fun while it lasted. But much like any bender, it has some drawbacks. . . .

12 oz Americano Robert: Brandi, my favourite barista of all time is back!!! In addition to Brandi being back Prado set the tone for the rest of the day.
Geoff: Overall pretty good, the extraction was a little bitter, but it hits the spot. Barista had a pleasant demeanor within the comfortable surroundings.

Espresso Macchiato Robert: Turks, where is the love? Ever since Gisele left months ago, I have rarely been back and now I know why. My Macchiato didn’t have any foam on top. It was more like an 8oz latte, which any Starbucks monkey could have made without the proper training.
Geoff: It is not of a calibre I was expecting. If I can make it at home better, then it is sadly lacking. If people are doing this for a living then they should be better at it than I. I come for the experience. The ambience is nice but the coffee lacks some quality

12oz Cappuccino Robert: Micro-foam of awesomeness, I have been back to Soma a number of times and enjoyed the cafe each time. Don Wilson usually tends bar on Sunday mornings and is quite the knowledgeable baritsa.
Geoff: Perfect temperature, solid latte art.Aftertaste a little strong but overall great experience. Friendly barista, knowledgeable about industry and trends, willing to learn. Soup was fantastic.
Elysian Room Logo Clover 12oz Clover 12oz Robert: We tired the Colombian – Antioquia and barista Mathew Kolehmainen gave us some Kenya – Mwiria to try and true to form the Kenyian was better then the Colombian but also almost twice the price. Thanks for the sampling Matt!
Geoff: My first time tasting coffee from a Clover. Pretty neat. A lot of body in taste, almost overwhelming, but it kept me wanting more. It tastes better following a slight cool down. Kenya is my favourite, although we didn’t try Ethiopia. The barista Matt knew of my favourite Saskatoon cafe – Cafe Museo, and it’s barista Jimmy. Small world!

Geoff: Really impressed by the feel of the place. The modern simplistic, West Coast style feel. You can really tell they put everything into their craft just from the feel of the place. Meeting the Canadian Barista Champion Colter Jones who happens to be from Saskatoon, my home town. In terms of the coffee I honestly could not appreciate it. I was too buzzed by the morning I was gone. Let this be a warning, Don’t try this at home. . . I definitely want to go back!

My good friend and awesome freelance photographer Geoff Howe is coming to Vancouver for a visit and wants to check out a few cafes. He is a convert from the Starbucks nation, but when living in Saskatoon there isn’t an abundance of choice available to him. So come February we’re going to take Vancouver by storm and check out as many cafes as we can.

I am also going to try and blog throughout the day. This is a new experiment for me and I won’t have the help of some sites like Twitter (We finally broke down and are now on Twitter)

We’re also going to hit a few haunts that I have been hanging out at but haven’t written about due to pressure from my homework load.

Bump in the Road

A while ago I blogged about Bump and Grind’s refusal to give out coffee sleeves with their coffee. Apparently they made the nightly news and they haven’t looked back since. In fact, according to Josh, they haven’t been busier, and oh yeah they are just as sassy as ever!!!

And while Bump and Grind is going sleeveless, a company my sister started will allow you to stylize your latte a bit while you’re helping to reuse & recycle.

The Coffee Cuff was created in Vancouver B.C. by myself, Loreen Dall, a Mompreneur who saw an advertisement for the “super rich” with a fur coffee sleeve and thought why can’t we all have a chic Coffee Cuff that we will actually use and help save the environment at the same time? A couple years later, the Coffee Cuff was born.

They have a wide variety of colours and one size fits 12, 16 and 20 oz. cups.

And yes she is my sister so I might be a bit biased, but I did try out a beta version of the cup and it fit nicely in my hands and it’s completely machine washable!

It is kinda odd to walk all the independent shops of Pike Place Market seeing all the fresh fish, local produce and general buzz of a local market place only to run into one of the largest corporate chains in North America.

The location has three cashiers and two barista’s working a three head machine. No tables or chairs and barely room to move due to the number of people. The drink was a 8oz Dry Cappuccino (no other information was given). It was made  perfectly, sure the expresso was complete crap but the drink was made exactly as a dry cappuccino should be. They also didn’t ask me if dry was like foamy they knew what dry providing these barista were familiar with a wide range of lexicon. For the volume of people on a warm and sunny New Years Eve afternoon it was amazing how well they were working that machine. I had my drink in seven minutes from time of ordering which is decent due to the massive amount of volume served.

While just blocks away. . .

But why can’t this excellent of quality be applied across the board, why just a blocks away from the famed Pike Place Cafe is it the same cookie cutter cafe that makes that same poorly made cappuccino on automatic machines. The automatic machines where brought in to speed up the services and reduce wait times, but at Pike Place I didn’t have an unusually long wait time. The staff handled the rush easily and effectively with teamwork.

Are the employees any less at the other locations, or are they just supplied with more training?

I find an unusual paradox that Starbucks found a good thing at the Pike Place more then 35 years ago and wanted to share this experience with the rest of the world, this I whole hearty agree with. But yet the rest of the worlds Starbucks don’t even remotely resemble the unique nature that is the Pike Place Cafe. Yes their are some really bad independent cafes in Vancouver and yes some chains stores are better then others, but what I really see at every other Starbucks and many other chains is a complete lack of training, knowledge and  a overall lower quality of service and in the immortal words of Howard Schultz:

“we have had to make a series of decisions that, in retrospect, have lead to the watering down of the Starbucks experience, and, what some might call the commoditization of our brand.” ~ February 23, 2007 ~

Before I go to Seattle I took a trip home for Christmas.

This time I decided to check out the Strait Coffee in the little neighbourhood of Wilson Creek just 15 minutes outside Sechelt.
The little cafe has been operating since 1995 in the small little mini mall located just off highway 101.

Owners of the little cafe have ebbed and flowed through much like the tide of this coast community but it wasn’t until current owner Grace Bland (Yes her last name is really bland) that this little cafe really took quality wise.

Anything but bland. . .

The cafe now roasts their own beans and supplies all  four Wheatberries locations. They also service most of the grocery stores on the coast with whole beans and a few other cafes I have yet to find. The wholesale business is locally based and uses  fair trade certification with customers from Whitehorse to Saskatchewan.

While I am home on the coast I go to either Strait or Wheatberries for the best dry cappuccinos’ on the planet. I am sure it is just the relaxed atmosphere or the fact I am usually on vacation when I am hear but I love to sit and savour the absolute best micro foam. ( I usually like it with a slight hint of vanilla sugar on top)

This cafe is also home to quite the latte artist. Now for as seasoned “Drive” veteran like myself latte art is nothing new, the leafs, hearts, are the old school versions of this art foam. But (yes a different Grace) has done something completely different with her skills. Watch the video below.

Bazinett, 25, has been a barista for about five years working in Vancouver, Alberta and now Sechelt, one day was pouring a latte and saw that the foam resembled a face. She then took the spoon and began drawing in the foam, an artist outside the cafe she always enjoyed drawing so this just came naturally.

Grace and Grace can usually found behind the counter in the mornings four to five days a week.

Update March 2009 ~ I recent had an Americano at Strait Coffee Traders and it was the best coffee of my recent trip home. If you are in the area and it is sunny and warm I would certainly suggest grabbing 12 oz. Americano, one of their white chocolate brownies and head up to Cliff Gilker Park in Robert Creek, you will certainly enjoy it, I did.

Surprise surprise, I am not sure if the Piccolo brothers can get away from the Cafe business or was this the goal all along.

But I was finally able to check out the 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters new cafe in downtown Kitsilano and a few things surprised me while other remain the same.

This is very much not another Caffe Artigiano by a different name. The skinny cafe with high ceilings a wooden bench that flow the length of the cafe, but yet broken up by banks of lights build into the wall.

Word on the street is this will be the one and only 49th Parallel Cafe. In answering my own question above, why open up a cafe after just selling off the successful chain you started. Well the answer is simple, the hard work was already done.

Not just another Artigiano

The Artigiano experiment was to compete head to head with the green machine, serving hug volumes, but exceeding expectation in terms of quality. They mainly succeeded and have 49th Parallel to show for it. A brand that many coffee drinkers know and a brand that independent cafes look for. But I also heard that after starting the roaster, the chain was a real drain on the brothers and when the right buyer came along they made the right decision to sell.

I felt great coming into this cafe, as busy as it was, I ordered my drink from a wonderful Kiwi girl offered a pleasant amount of conversation while I ordered.

I ordered a medium Americano which weighted in at 9 oz in size. I walked over to the sparkling new expresso machine and with in about 30 seconds had my americano in hand.

True to form the Epic Expresso was rich with flavor full of body and had a nice aftertaste that was actually leaving me wanting more. So. . . I had more. . . but I decided to have something from The Clover this time.

No drip to be found here

After a cleansing of the palette The Costa Rican was a really smooth coffee with a hint of caramel sweetness. Americano’s and The Clover is usual fair, brewed coffee is only available on the weekends.

If you are looking to get your coffee to go and in a rush you might have to wait more then a couple seconds because every cup is made independently on the clover and perfection take time.

While on a little trip back home to the Sunshine Coast I decided to check out a little cafe called Wheatberries Bakery. This cafe started as a bakery and is home to the best cookies in the entire world, it’s coffee doesn’t take a back seat either.

The Sechelt location has an open wood feel with sunflowers through out the cafe. There is large bay windows through out the cafe seating area and both indoor and outdoor area’s are bathed in natural light for most of the day.

The company started in the garage of the Mark & Jane Yellowley Robert’s Creek home in 1997 as just a bakery and had quite the following from the early beginnings. They opened their first location in Gibsons (circa 2002) to foster more growth beyond what their garage could handle. At this time they started the cafe portion.

The Sechelt Location has been operating for about three years and is centrally located right behind the cenotaph at the end of Cowrie Street.

The little family run company now has two locations in Gibsons, a year round small kiosk at the Langdale Ferry Terminal and the Sechelt Location. I don’t think their after world domination (aka like the big green machine) but it is so nice to get a good cup of coffee before catching the ferry.

The Coffee is supplied by Straight Coffee Traders of Wilson Creek another family run coastal enterprise and is organic fair trade and offers a wide variety of roasts to chose from. I had dry cappuccino which had beautiful velvet foam and was perfectly made. I couldn’t of ask for a better cup anywhere on the Lower Mainland.

The Sechelt location has wireless and was working the last time I was in town. ( March, 09 )

Langdale where the hell is Langdale?

Langdale’s claim to fame is the BC Ferries terminal to Vancouver and for the longest time if you ever missed a boat all you had to look forward to was three sparsely filled vending machines and a dullsville of waiting room for two hours.

Well more then a year ago now Wheatberries took over a former hot dog stand and turned it into a coffee Kiosk which they decided to keep open all year long.

Anything, ANYTHING is better then BC ferries coffee and when I missed the boat a couple of times last winter it was the saving grace of a long two hour wait.

You can bump and grind just don’t ask for a sleeve

For this review I decided to say a little closer to home, in fact this is the closest café to my house on The Drive.

Bump and Grind is a saucy joint that has been open for a couple of years on the northern most edge of the Drive. The café is run by Audrey and Joe ( Christine sold the cafe in May, 2008 ) who are business partners and can usually see most days behind the counter.

The surroundings of Bump and Grind give away that this is a little more counter culture then your usual fair. The café boasts a couch full of vocabulary one large table and a few smaller ones with art that changes on a monthly basis. The café has one of the most interesting art installations a while back where the entire café was covered in “2000 pages of handwritten study notes from a Doctoral Candidate” in political science. It was one of the best art displays in a coffee shop, I had ever seen.

DJ can now be seen in the cafe spinning vinyl on the turn tables in the back on the weekends and during the week Joe and Audrey seem to always have something funky playing in the shop.

There is wifi at the shop, but they had taken away all but one power plugins away due to abuse by some loitering customers.

If you just want to sit in a cafe for six hours and nurse one cup of tea go find a Waves.

Sleeves are for wimps

A while back I dropped in to ask if I could have a sleeve for my coffee, (I didn’t bring my own mug ) and it was a bit of a struggle to get one. Apparently Josh and Christine have something against sleeves of the world, Actually they are just trying to reduce the impact on our environment and they are pretty militant about it. But instead of just bitching about something they decided to do something about it.

At Bump and Grind if you want a sleeve you’ll have to pay a buck for one, and they’ll want you to keep it too. It is a cool concept and I wish them the best of luck with it.

A little sauce with your coffee

What I really enjoy about the drive is the fact that you can a huge variety of people and viewpoints. I think it is what makes people come to the drive. Bump and Grind is no different. Just don’t ask for a sleeve. Josh and Christine sold the cafe to Audrey and Joe in May, 08. The coffee is still the same quality but is lacking the saucy and somewhat abusive attitude. Dam I will miss that.

Since purchasing the cafe last year Joe and Audrey have really captured the attention of coffee drinkers in Vancouver and it has become one of the top cafes in Vancouver, When some of the top Barista in the country go to Bump and Grind to enjoy an espresso you know they must be doing something right.

The Cornerstone of Coquitlam

Just because I’m leaving “The Drive” doesn’t have to mean I have to give up on good independent coffee does it?

Not in Coquitlam. I had the opportunity to check out Cornerstone Coffee.

Walking in your met with tastefully painted concrete floors that look like title, wood tables and chairs, and the most comfortable leather sofa chairs I have seen in any coffee shop.

Drinking my vanilla chai I got nice and comfy and realized these sofa chairs were much too enjoyable for doing any type of homework. This was true I barely got a thing done.

Twice baked, once enjoyed

Like an olive in a martini, or a drink umbrella in a mai tai no specialty drink is complete without a small biscotti. I have seen this as not much more then a gimmick at other chain shops, but at Cornerstone I welcomed the addition, it was a real biscotti, and tasted dam good.

The walls are decorated with quotes and photos about coffee and cafes. Again I have seen this done very poorly elsewhere as marketing ploy but Cornerstone has a nice collection that doesn’t pat themselves on the back, these phrases are also duplicated on their website.

Beans are provided by 49th Parallel coffee roasters and were not just chosen for their quality beans, but because Cornerstone is social conscience about their affects on the developing world.

Afternoon Tea?

What surprised me the most was the 39 different varieties of organic tea you could choose from. They are supplied by not one, not two, but three different tea companies:

If this selection leaves you overwhelmed, ask the barista behind the counter. I found Leah bel to be extremely knowledgeable about the teas and coffee served.

After seven years in the business it is no surprise that Cornerstone has stood the test of time and carved out a niche for itself. I’d highly recommend anyone in the area check out this jewel of a café, it will certainly be worth it.

Am I blogging. . . .

Here is my first entry to my first ever blog. I am a Vancouverite and I live just off coffee central. . . Commercial Drive. (known henceforth as” The Drive”)

Ever since my mother said I could make coffee in the morning for me and my father, I have been addicted to the stuff. I love it, nothing wakes me up more or gets my ass into gear come 3:00 pm or 3:00 am depending what I am up to. . . .

Since that time I have become a bit of an aficionado and revel in how it is made and what taste good and bad.

In future episodes of this blog you’ll read my rant’s and rave’s about different coffee shops and chains, and any industry information that tickles my fancy. I’ll also write reviews of cafes I have been to recently and if they have wireless internet. I will be adding my reviews to Caffeinated and Unstrung which is apparently back up and running, Aug, 09.
